    1. What is a NetID?

The NetID is the Network Identifier that UConn issues to allow access to certain computing services. These services include: Student Administration, HuskyCT, Exchange (Faculty/Staff email and calendaring), VPN and many others.
Note: The list of services will grow, as many of UConn’s computing services allow you to use a common ID and password to log in.

    1. How do I obtain a NetID?

There are many processes that lead to the generation of a NetID. The creation of NetIDs for students, including applicants and high school students in Early College Experience (ECE), is an automated process dependent upon the establishment of a record in the Student Administration system. NetIDs for faculty, staff & Special Payroll are dependent upon the paper workflow through the Payroll Department. For information about the creation of Affiliate NetIDs go to www.affiliate.uconn.edu. Please note that University Affiliates do not necessarily have UConn email accounts and their access to certain applications may be restricted.

    1. How will I be notified once my NetID has been created?

NetIDs are created for prospective students, applicants and incoming matriculated students; notification is sent to the personal email address that is on file with the University with information about their NetIDs and how to activate them.
New faculty and staff are mailed similar NetID paper correspondence to their residences and UConn departmental mailboxes. Anyone who does not have an email address or real Social Security number will receive similar paper correspondence at their residence.

    1. What is the format of my NetID?

Your NetID consists of three lower case letters (usually your initials) – abc – the year you were issued your NetID – 06 and a 3-digit sequential number of persons with your initials being assigned a NetID the same year, i.e. abc06003. This is to accommodate the large number of NetID users and to ensure there are no duplicates. The eventual goal is to have the issued NetID be the only ID you will need to know and use to access UConn resources.

    1. Can I change my NetID?

No. The NetID is intended to be a unique, irrevocable, persistent identifier for each individual in the University Community. The NetID format is loosely based on the user’s name, which means it may use initials or other letters from the user’s name. Most IDs are created using either the user’s initials, or the first two letters of the first name and the first letter of the last name. The automated process that creates the IDs is entirely systematic and does not always generate the exact ID that a user wants. The generated IDs should not be shared with others outside of providing you technical assistance; it is only a set of characters for logging into systems by a single individual.

    1. Can I change my e-mail address?

Personal names (or aliases) provide UConn’s students, faculty and staff an opportunity to have a more personalized and easier to read and/or remember e-mail address in addition to the standardized name originally assigned to them. For more information on personalization of your e-mail address please visit http://uitsaccounts.uconn.edu/docs/pname.html.

    1. How long will my NetID be active?

If you are a student, your NetID will remain active “forever;” however, former students are only able to log into a limited number of services after leaving the University. Generally, faculty and staff NetIDs remain active for anywhere from 30 days to 365 days depending on the user’s individual employment status at UConn. Because of their special status within the University, the NetIDs of Emeritus faculty remain active indefinitely.
